Default Sub domains in url benefit

While setting up our developing (new) site I thought about sub-domain in
url.
currently subdomain is forced by static pages, but now I have the option
of adding "sub domain" or not in url.

Let's say.. I am addind a particular treadmill called.. a "t9i treadmill
made by LifeFitness"

what's the groups thoughts on the following..

http://www.domain.co.uk/cat/fitness-...-t9i-treadmill
http://www.domain.co.uk/cat/fitness-...ifefitness/t9i
http://www.domain.co.uk/cat/fitness-.../t9i-treadmill
www.domain.co.uk/cat/lifefitness-t9i-treadmill

From a user-logical point of view I am thinking #2 as this would give a
more logical site-map creation working backwards to prime top level
key-words.

Curiously a lots several top positions for product-specific terms are
held by websites with absolutely no usefull URL info.

I know the URL has only the slightest benefit from an SEO point of view,
but from a users point of view there must surely be a preference?

Cheers
Pete

After much trawling....
I have come to the conclusion all products off "root" and named by
product name.

Site structure is very heirarcal and being created with these specifics
in mind, so what I am noticing is if the product (key word) is right
under the meta description displayed then id adds weight to user "eye
value" rather than being sat in peripheral vision on the right.

Also, as others have noted on various web-blogs it's short, easy to
post/mail without word-wrap and to-the-point.

:¬)
I think I have answered my own question.

for what reason Bill?
That was my original thought as it only goes 4 deep, but from further
browsing and searching I found shorter was better from a visual perspective.

But... until I start really adding products, I have nothing set in stone
hence the general request.

several of our competitors have nothing more than for example ....
..co.uk\treadmills.php\id2232 (or whatever)

Again, just fishing for general opinions.
Thanks for your suggestion Bill.

Depends a little on how many products there are; going four clicks deep for
one or two products negates any advantage of your nomenclature (dread
term!).

But I'd plump for
/ fitness-equipment / treadmills / lifefitness-t9i

I don't know what the 'cat' is - put that back if it matters.
repetition is unnecessary and boring, and kills any hope of type-ins
KISS!

category. And yes, I would remove it.

Also, to make the URL shorter, remove the www (redirect www to non-www)

So:
http:// domain.co.uk/fitness-equipment/treadmills/lifefitness-t9i

Fits on a line perfectly :-)

Otherwise, set up a URL redirection service on your domain (I am about to
do so), meaning you can give someone a link via email, etc. that's
shorter, e.g. if someone wants info on the lifefitness-t9i, just
mail

http:// domain.co.uk/3efc/lifefitness-t9i

with 3efc the id of that page. And of course that URL 301 redirects.

The URL clearly shows that it's about the t9i.

Example: http://www.guymacon.com/insult.html

(Ignore the all caps result; that is a leftover from when I had
the site on a ISO 9660 CD-ROM. Nowdays you can you can make
a hybrid CD-ROM with an ISO 9660 index and index extensions for
Rock Ridge (Linux/BSD/OS X/UNIX), Joliet (Windows 9x/NT.2K/XP),
and HFS (Macintosh OS 9 or lower).)

If fact, there is no particular reason why the structure of
the URLs has to have any resemblance to the structure of the
filesystem. I do it that way just because it's simpler.

We currently have close to 600 products listed on Froogle.. Googlebase
or whatever, so we should be getting close to around 1000 products when
we can add products more efficiently than our current PITA solution.

/cat/ must stand for catalogue or perhaps category, either way It's
there and must be there.

Looks like everyone has their own preference....
I have just found the following on searchenginewatch.com

"For example, it's better to use www.sitename.com/KeywordA-KeywordB/
than http://www.sitename.com/Category-Nam...wordA-KeywordB.
Make sure this doesn't affect usability of your Web site, though. For
SEO purposes alone, however, this is preferred." - Mark Jackson

There will of course be a page on the new site called "treadmills" at
www.sitename.com/cat/treadmills with then heads off to 3 pages being called
/home-fitness-treadmills/
/light-commercial-treadmills/
/full-commercial-treadmills/

then on to product pages
So having gone the full circle, and getting my head around the fact that
the site is not tied by real life sub directories I go back to
thinking every page located right after sitename.com/cat/page-name

:¬)
Like you said, KISS.

Thanks for your input Andrew.

I doubt this one, especially since cat and sub cat are (or should be)
related with the keywords.

It's got everything in it. Hyphenated too.

You know better though.
