Hi, I've probably asked something like this before in this group. Sorry if I'm boring anyone. I get an awful lot of image search hits to my aff sites, but very few conventional search engine hits. Is there anything I can do to improve the text search to image search result ratio? I don't wan't to stop the image search results with a robots.txt entry or anything, I would just like a few more text search hits. Tressie http://www.review-a-gadget.com/ <- site most affected! |

The 'ratio' isn't the issue. you could improve that by reducing image searches, which would be loopy! treat the two as separate, which they are. 1. You don't have an image search problem Great! 2. You do have a text search problem. Two major issues: A. Your site appears in sevral places: http://members.iinet.net.au/~vanluynm/, http://www.review-a-gadget.com/, http://review-a-gadget.com/ - at best, this divides your visitors between three sites - and your ranking. At worst, it can stop people finding your pages. B. You have virtually no text. on many key pages. If you want to be found in text searches, you need text for the SEs to compare with search terms. Example: Your front page includes the text "remote controlled helicopter" - but the page you are taken to does not include that text - or virtually any other potential search terms, other than two product names. You need to get in your potential customers heads, and be sure the terms they might use are included. By the way, I suspect Google has noticed the spam links on your front page and counted them against you. You need to familiarise yourself with SE guidelines - you don't have to follow them. But they don't have to index your pages, either. So treating Google as if they are stupid is a tad unlikely to improve your visitor numbers. Just a thought ;o) And even if Google hasn't noticed, how long before a competitor dobs you in? -- Andrew http://www.seo2seo.com/ http://www.sick-site-syndrome.com/ First things first - but not necessarily in that order. http://www.whalesrevenge.com/ |

Hi Andrew,
Thanks very much for taking an interest in this one. Oops! Am I going to be penalised by Google for the front page links with only dots as link text. I guess thats what you mean by spam links. I couldn't see a problem with the concept, but if you say they are going to be a problem, then they're the first thing to go. Yes, I guess the lack of text search engine results may have something to do with my lack of text on each page. I really just wanted to hack up a few nasty little affiliate pages to see if I could make a quick buck or two. Obviously I'm going to have to put a bit more work into the next site (the beginnings of which comprise the spam links you may have followed). Thanks very much for the input Andrew. Tressie. > Thanks very much for taking an interest in this one. No worries, and Paul makes good points, too. In general, realted links = good, nonrelated / paidlinks = bad Always promote differently themed sites independently. The problem with all affiliate sites, is you have to always be conscious that there are another 20,000 istes out there, and you have to be better thatn every single one of them! Sounds daunting - but 95% of them will be identical, so you are off to a good start by having your own page design! Where you have text, that also looks like your own, which helps much more. In my experience (mostly with Good Ole Amazon), the 'trick' is to choose a small niche, value uniquity above all else, choose products that will be around for a few years, and expand slowly. But you always need a fair bit of text, to encompass every likely search term. A good affiliate program will have reviews that you can plumb - but be selective, or you'll lose the 'unique page factor'. Hasn't made me rich, but it pays the bills, and the joy is, it does grow faster than inflation! -- Andrew http://www.seo2seo.com/ http://www.sick-site-syndrome.com/ First things first - but not necessarily in that order. http://www.whalesrevenge.com/ |

Hi Paul,
Thanks very much for your post. Yes, I agree that I've completely stuffed the R-A-G site by including all those MJ seed page links. It's just a quick experiment before I have to go back to school this fortnight. The review-a-gadget site has made a grand total of $2.00 this month, so I figured I'd drain all that wasted PR into a few experimental pages for a bit just to see what happens. The new pages listed quickly, then just as quickly disappeared. Now they're back in Google's index, but 95% of the hits are from image searches. I totally agree with you that I've put badly perceived things on the review-a-gadget site. It's still just an experiment for the new pages, and it won't last long (even less time if I can fix R-A-G). I'll have a play with this idea for the new pages, as there are only 10 of then to update so far. Yes, I'm dying to learn a bit of CSS so I can lose the 'amateurish look' that my pages always currently have. It might have to wait until next Christmas, or maybe midyear, unfortunately. Hey, my first bottom post! :-) Tressie. |
