I recall a discussion from last year (can't recall where I read this) and
someone argues that this mythical 100 link limit is no longer there. It also
depends on the search engine that you target...

You read it here, I htink, SEO Dave was banging on about it.

In Google XML sitemaps protocol a single
sitemap file can contain up to 50.000 urls.

However, if it was a HTML sitemap, I would say
limit yourself to 100-200 pages.

I would still prefer to have less links on the sitemap for humans
because prefer the sitemap to assist the users and not the SE. They
tend to find their way out. Check out my site layout at www.go4expert.com
where I have sitemap for users.

Thanks
Shabbir

They are chalk and cheese.

A sitemap for SEs - xml, up to 50,000 entries - is much much good for
humans.

A sitemap for humans needs to be much smaller; if your site has logical
navigation, the sitemap will also assist SEs; but not as much as a
comprehensive one would.

Why not have both?

First things first - but not necessarily in that order.

I think you're right. Something tells me that Cat confirmed this, but it's all
very vague. We had a big thread about it...

My experience shows that a PR2 page with ~1000 links has all the cited pages
indexed (or at least cached). The inherited PR is very low (around 0). This is
one among many such cases, so probably no coincidence here. with broadband, a
page this large should be tolerable to a human, I think.

Indeed. Matt Cutts suggested 100 as a reasonable limit, which in many
ways it is.

But the world is competitive. Even Google (gasp!) has competitors and
if they follow more than 100, Google has to too.
